In Davos, Vietnam PM asks business executives to push for EVFTA passage
The PM encouraged more investment activities from global enterprises including Apple, Facebook, while expecting the European business community to push for the approval of EU – Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
On the sideline of the 49th annual World Economic Forum (WEF) 2019 meeting in Davos, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has had various meetings with executives of world’s leading corporate giants including Apple, Facebook, Adidas, Carlsberg, AB Inbev, among others, and asked them to support the early approval of the landmark EVFTA, the governmental portal reported.
At the meetings with the executives, Phuc requested the European business community to push for the approval of the EVFTA, which is expected to play a key role for a greater cooperation between Vietnamese and European companies.
He stressed the European businesses has been supportive to Vietnam during the negotiation process of EVFTA. He expected the enforcement of EVFTA would bring benefits to citizens and enterprises of both EU and Vietnam.
Vietnam and the EU completed the legal revision of the trade agreement last year, and is waiting for its passing at the EU Parliment.
At the meeting with Apple’s CEO Tim Cook on January 23, Phuc congratulated the US tech giant on its business successes in Vietnam over the past few years. The PM expressed his support for Apple’s plan of establishing a database center in Vietnam.
Phuc expected Apple to commit to long-term business in Vietnam and facilitate more investment activities from US companies to the country.
On the same day, Phuc had separate meetings with Carlos Brito, CEO of the world’s largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB Inbev), Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted and Carlsberg CEO Cees’t Hart. The PM stressed the Vietnamese government has been restructuring the economy towards sustainability and a better business environment in a transparent and favorable manner for investors.
Meeting with Mages- vanran Suranjan, CEO of US leading consumer goods corporation Procter & Gamble (P&G), Phuc requested P&G to expand investment activities in Vietnam in the coming time.
Phuc also had meeting with Nick Clegg, Facebook’s head of global affairs and communications. He expected Facebook to be more active in supporting local companies accessing information and expanding businesses on social media. The PM requested Facebook to fully comply with Vietnamese law in preventing fake news.
