Hanoi selected to support sustainable product value chains

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has selected Hanoi as the locality to launch the project “Food Safety for Development”.

The signing and launching ceremonies of the cooperation program to support Hanoi in building and developing some sustainable product value chains was held this week in the capital city by  MARD‘s  National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department and the city’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Embassy of Canada in Vietnam.

The project’s goal is to support the capital city in establishing eight sustainable agro-forestry-fishery value chains as well as the branding and marketing of some of their products, Director of the National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department Nguyen Nhu Tiep said at the event.

Selected chains will receive supports in infrastructure, equipment, quality improvement and food safety from production to consumption, design, packaging, and marketing, he told The Hanoi Times.

Brian Allemekinders, Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Canada to Vietnam, said that the food safety project will support stakeholders in the rapid testing and inspection device chain, science and technology transfer, management software, retrieval and digital transformation in the pilot model.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Ngoc Son said, currently, the demand for food of the city’s roughly 10 million people is huge, while Hanoi's own supply has only met 35% of this demand. It is necessary to enhance trade links for the production and consumption of farm produce with provinces and cities.

In recent years, with its restructure plan, Hanoi's agricultural industry has focused on developing the supply chain of safe agricultural, forestry and aquatic products for the city. About 159 chains have been built and developed including 53 in animal husbandry and 106 in farming.

In addition, the city has coordinated with other provinces and cities in marketing and sale of  safe agriculture, forestry and fishery products in Hanoi. Thus, it has contributed to promoting production and business, linking stakeholders, providing high-quality food and ensuring food safet.

Hanoi and 21 northern provinces and cities, in the 2015-20 period, built 786 safe food supply chains (accounting for 48% of the whole country) such as: Hoang Long Cooperative, Organic Green pork, chicken eggs of Tien Vien JSC, and Kinoko Thanh Cao mushroom.

The city will continue to expand cooperation with localities nationwide to build another 140 safe food supply chains for the capital.
