Hanoi upgrades road infrastructure to ease congestion

Hanoi city has constructed and upgraded a spate of transport infrastructure works to improve the public transport network and reduce urban traffic jams.

During 10 years of administrative boundary expansion since 2008, Hanoi has invested in building many new urban areas, social infrastructure, technical infrastructure, especially traffic system with key projects.

Right after the expansion of administrative boundaries, the capital’s population more than doubled. Under the pressure of population growth, investment in transport infrastructure development is the key task.

Since then, the transport infrastructure system has expanded continuously over the years, reflected in the target of land area for transport increasing about 0.28% of urban land per year. Accordingly, land area for transport reached 7% in 2010, 8.65% in 2015 and about 9.2% in 2017.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture Le Vinh said that the highlight in building traffic infrastructure is the work to reduce traffic jams in the inner city.

In the last 10 years, Hanoi has completed three major bridges across the Red River (Nhat Tan bridge, Vinh Tuy bridge, and Vinh Thinh bridge); constructed nine flyovers at intersections with heavy traffic congestion such as Lang Ha - Huynh Thuc Khang, Chua Boc - Thai Ha, Tran Khat Chan - Dai Co Viet, Nguyen Chi Thanh - Kim Ma, Tran Khat Chan - Kim Nguu, Vinh said.

Transport system connects the city center with the peripheral areas by ring roads, such as ring road 1 (Hoang Cau - Voi Phuc, belt road 2 (Vinh Tuy - Cho Mo - Nga Tu So), ring road 2.5 (Trung Kinh - Nguyen Trai - Dam Hong - national highway 1A) and ring road 3 (Mai Dich - Nam Thang Long). At present, the city is preparing to deploy ring road 4 south of the Red River, and calling for investors to invest in the project in the form of public-private partnership (PPP), Vinh added.

Major roads connecting the inner city with neighboring provinces have been upgraded and expanded, such as Phap Van - Cau Gie highway, Ngoc Hoi - Giai Phong road, and national highway 6. Along with that, the inter-provincial road system has also been regularly upgraded and enlarged, such as national highway 1, Cau Gie - Ninh Binh expressway, Hanoi - Thai Nguyen expressway, Hanoi - Hai Phong expressway, and Hanoi - Lang Son expressway, Vinh added.

Besides roads, the city has been investing in urban railways. In eight urban railway lines in the central urban area, the city is focusing on completing two routes namely Cat Linh 2A – Ha Dong and Nhon 3 - Hanoi Railway Station, Vinh said.

The director of the Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture also emphasized that after 10 years of expansion and 8 years of implementing the construction master plan for Hanoi to 2030 with vision to 2050, the technical infrastructure, especially the transport infrastructure, has changed and urban roads have been built, contributing to the improvement of the public transport network and the reduction of urban traffic jams.
