Many experts at a seminar in Hanoi on July 7 expressed belief that Hanoi can apply Japanese experience in public transport development.

At the seminar, Director of the Urban Traffic Management and Control Center Nguyen Hoang Hai said that public transport in Hanoi is facing many challenges such as unsecured transport infrastructure, the booming of private vehicles, shortcomings in traffic organization and increasing traffic congestion, Hai said.

He added that according to many experts, the construction of public transport systems in Hanoi should be planned in a methodical way. In particular, applying experience from other countries like Japan is recommendable.

Takashi Kobayashi from the General Policy Department under the Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism pointed out the two most important issues when building transport infrastructure to encourage a large number of people to use public transport.

The first is transshipment points, which will be the hub for connecting public transport with each other.

The second is improving utility design for traffic participants and ancillary works to improve the quality of public transport services with the motto of taking people as the center.

According to Kobayashi, Hanoi’s authority should have strong support policies to develop public transport, especially putting high-quality buses into use.

Besides, it is necessary to have policies to minimize the use of private vehicles, encouraging people to use public transport, Kobayashi added.
