For nearly 3 years, Ms. Paul George Harding and nearly 40 people have repaired and repainted many advertisement painted wall in Hanoi.
Nearly 50 years after the war, the American veteran - Paul George Harding (69 years old) returned to Vietnam. In addition to teaching English for free to students, he also encouraged them to remove advertising leaflets on the wall, electricity poles ... along many streets.
Paul George Harding was a paratrooper of the 173rd Air Force Brigade joining the Binh Dinh-Lam Dong battlefield in 1969. Upon his retirement, he came to Vietnam to make up for his wartime actions. He considers free teaching and beautifying the walls as his happiness.

He set up a volunteer team to repaint the musty, peeled and stained wall along with those filled with advertising leaftlets in the area of Trung Hoa Ward, Cau Giay District.

The team has cleaned four big streets. The walls will be painted and patterned accordingly. He said before remodeling, the team would contact the authorities and call the advertisers to prevent them from this illegal activity.

The volunteer team includes nearly 40 people, working on Hoang Ngan and Nguyen Ngoc Vu street.

Some walls shall be decorated accordingly. Paint and tools expenses are paid by the America veteran.

Pham Quoc Hung (12 years old, from Chu Van An Secondary school) said: “I have known him for more than 3 months, in addition to learning English, I go with him in free time. My parents think this is a good job”.

Mr. Dong Vu Hiep (Lane 1, Nguyen Thi Dinh street) evaluated that the volunteer team has brought a brighter look to the lane. This action should be developed to raise awareness of environment protection.

Mr. Paul George Harding said that in the future he would continue his activities, considered that this is a “long lasting” activity.
