The US Ambassdor said in a statement released today: "On behalf of the US Mission in Vietnam, I would like to express our sincere condolences on the passing of President Tran Dai Quang. Our sympathies go out to his family and the people of Vietnam at this sad time.
President Tran Dai Quang was a friend of the US-Vietnam relationship. His hosting of President Donald J. Trump’s historic state visit to Hanoi in November 2017 helped advance the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership to new heights on the basis of mutual understanding, shared interests, and a common desire to promote peace, cooperation, prosperity, and security in the Indo-Pacific region."
"We honor his legacy and mourn his loss alongside his family and our friends, the people of Vietnam", the statement wrote.
President Quang died of a rare viral illness at 10:05 am on September 21 at the National Military Hospital 108, the healthcare division of central officials informed, without specifying his disease.
Born in October 1956, Quang started his career as a police student in 1972 and was promoted to Minister of Public Security in 2011 and conferred General title in 2012.
In April 2016, he was elected by the National Assembly President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
