How big is Hanoi Innovation Summit?

The biggest-ever event is expected to bring foreign investors to Vietnam and innovate sustainability for Vietnamese startup ecosystems.

The Hanoi Innovation Summit is a brand new international event held for the first time in Hanoi, attracting more than 100 international speakers, hundreds of domestic and foreign innovators, investors and startups, and more than 3,000 attendees.

Taking place on August 29-30, the summit is co-created by two France-based companies Schoolab and Startup Sesame, and is co-hosted by the Hanoi People’s Committee and the Ministry of Planning and Investment. 

Major tech players attending Hanoi Innovation Summit (HIS) include AWS, Microsoft, IBM, TechCrunch, NBC News, Golden Gate Venture, Click Ventures, among others.

Experts are those from Finnish ecological champion Nordic 247 to South-Korean-based Pablo Air Co., Ltd.’s Drone Show Software, to Singapore gems such as Vulcan Augmentics, the bionic limbs manufacturer. 

HIS covers six major themes namely Environment (GreenTech, CleanTech, Water, Sustainability), Mobility & Logistics, Smart Cities (5G, IoT, Real Estate, GovTech), Life Sciences (Food, AgTech, Health, Biotech), Future of Work (HRTech, EdTech), Consumer Technologies (Fintech, e-com, travel tech).

The finalists are:
AirGo Design, a Singaporean startup working on the next generation economy seat experience
AYA CUP, a Vietnamese company producing cups made from bamboo fibers to minimize all harmful funky chemicals that single use plastic might leak into your body
Carbon Upcycling Technologies, a Canadian player which sequesters CO2 in solids and produces high-quality nanoparticles

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said HIS is the biggest-ever event held so far in Hanoi.

The mayor said the summit creates chances to connect startups in Hanoi and Vietnam in general with global startup ecosystems as well as foreign investors, giant tech firms, universities, and research institutes. 

The municipal government’s leader emphasized that Hanoi gives great importance to developing startup ecosystems by offering favorable policies and conditions for them, especially a project on supporting startups located in Hanoi for the 2019-2025 period. 

The number of newly-established businesses in Hanoi recorded more than 88,000 in 2016-2019, totaling 272,000 firms in the city.

Meanwhile, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said the event is expected to call for foreign investment in Vietnam’s startups. 

To better prepare for the startup ecosystems in Vietnam, the ministry has cooperated with related agencies and localities, including Hanoi, to improve manpower in technology sector. The ministry will expand networks of Vietnamese intellectuals abroad and develop Vietnam Global Innovation Fund which aims to improve human resources together with the development of the National Innovation Center (NIC). 

Chung thanked a group of Hanoi’s students in Boston, the US, while in the internship at Paris-headquartered Schoolab has initiated the organization of the summit. 

Schoolab, which helps make firms’ forces more agile and entrepreneurial, will join the mission of intensifying the development of Vietnamese startup ecosystems by making local firms found by international innovators and investors, Quentin Frécon, Managing Director of Schoolab Vietnam, told Hanoitimes.
