The Mangkhut super typhoon is forecast to directly hit Vietnam’s northern provinces on September 17 and 18, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung chaired the meeting of the Steering Committee for disaster prevention, research and rescue with leaders of departments and districts to actively respond to the Mangkhut typhoon on September 17 morning.
Due to the storm’s circulation, from early morning of September 17, Vietnam’s northeastern region has reported heavy rains with the rainfall of 100-150mm. Hanoi is predicted to have rainfall of 50-100mm.
At the meeting, Standing Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Van Suu asked units to actively respond to Mangkhut typhoon’s development and keep informing the residents about the storm.
Suu required the Hanoi Department of Construction to pay attention to high-rise buildings, irrigation works. At the same time, the units are requested to respond 24/7 and suggest plans for urgent relocation if any incident occurs.
Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung stressed that Mangkhut has changed its direction, but the storm’s circulation can still cause heavy rain, the units still have to actively respond as the city has directed.
The chairman asked the units to check all facilities for flood prevention, plans for overcoming the problem, urgent plans to manage water drainage and traffic flow.
Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung assigned Green Park Ltd.Co. to urgently trim trees to ensure safety for travelers on roads, the city’s police forces to manage traffic jam.
For Quoc Oai district, where the incident of soil erosion happened due to unauthorized mining in March 2018, Chairman Chung requested the district’s authority to roll out a plan to overcome the long-term sustainability, propagate and mobilize its residents to actively relocate for safety.
